Butterworth police have ruled out foul play in the death of prominent Eastern Cape doctor Shadrack Ndindwa.
Backtracking from an earlier statement that Ndindwa died during an attempted hijacking, Captain Jackson Manatha said postmortem results now suggest otherwise.
He said Ndindwa, 59, died of internal injuries, which he sustained after his luxury German car overturned on Centani Road at 11pm on Friday.
Manatha said Ndindwa could have been hit by the steering wheel of his vehicle and this had resulted in the doctor's internal injuries.
"Bank documents and a cellphone are the only items missing from his vehicle," he said.
Ndindwa's daughter, Bayanda, supported the police version.
She said her father had sustained a blunt trauma injury during the accident.
Manatha said the postmortem had been conducted by three doctors at the weekend.
Ndindwa is survived by his wife, Ndileka, his daughter Bayanda and her two siblings.
