Fans of Tina Turner, probably one of the most dynamic female soul singers in the music industry, will be disappointed with Tina Rock Diva.
The show, currently running at Tesson Theatre at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre in Braamfontein, is a celebration of the diva's life.
Featuring Lucia Mthiyane as Turner, the musical was a mild affair on opening night.
Mthiyane is a talented singer, but she did not do justice to Turner. Her voice was not at all convincing as she sang What's lovegot to do with it, Nutbush City and Simply the Best.
Turner is one of the most energetic musicians on stage, but Mthiyane's body was stiff. She did not look prepared or ready and seemed to be rehearsing. The dancers were good, the costumes were magnificent, but the stage design was cheap. Tina Rock Diva is on until November 12.
