Seshego police have greeted with dismay the news of the death of a senior colleague, Inspector Oupa Makhurana, in a traffic accident.

Makhurana, 40, died in Kalkspruit, near Polokwane, while investigating several criminal cases in the area on Friday night.

Inspector Mohlaka Mashiane, of the Seshego police, said Makhurana had earlier appeared in court in Sekhukhune in connection with a case in which he was the investigating officer.

"Upon his return from Sekhukhune, Makhurana collected some dockets and went to Kalkspruit to investigate them," Mashiane said.

"We were told at around 10pm on Friday that Makhurana lost control of his police bakkie on the Kalkspruit-Ga-Mapangula road near Ga-Maraba," he said.

Makhurana, who was from Seshego, Northern Province, was killed instantly.

Mashiane said he and his colleagues were shocked by the death of their colleague, a dedicated officer.

"He died in the line of duty while investigating several cases that had been allocated to him.

"It shows the kind of commitment he had for his job," Mashiane said.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalised.
