Newly engaged popstar Lady Gaga and her fiance Taylor Kinney took an icy dip in Lake Michigan on Sunday, joining other celebrities and thousands of people in raising money for the Special Olympics.

"It was awesome," Lady Gaga, 28, said as she emerged soaked from the lake, according to the Chicago Tribune. Wearing a blonde wig and red lipstick, Gaga had entered the frigid waters riding piggy-back on a bare-chested Kinney.

Actor Vince Vaughn, 44, and Chicago mayoral candidate Jesus Garcia also were among about 4,500 people who took the event, known as the polar plunge.

The annual polar plunge this year raised 1.1 million dollars for Special Olympics - the most in its history.

Lady Gaga last month announced her engagement to Kinney, 33, one of the stars of the television drama Chicago Fire. The six-time Grammy award winner posted a picture of her heart-shaped diamond engagement ring on social media site Instagram.
