THE DJ industry is growing faster than anticipated.

With everyone itching to break into the industry, it becomes progressively more difficult for young DJs to get a platform.

The introduction of Red Square's "DJ Knockout" competition will give many young DJs exposure.

Peace Shabangu, organiser of the competition, said the idea started in 2005 with the aim of giving young and upcoming DJs a platform.

"Through this competition we have uncovered the best talent," Shabangu said. "The aim is to give them exposure and recognition."

The competition started in Tembisa and has now spread the to East Rand, the Vaal, Soweto and Pretoria.

"Some (DJs from the competition) have gone to greater heights and are releasing hit tunes, while others feature prominently in collaborations with respected DJs."

The winner will walk away with R40,000 and R20,000 will be shared among the two runners-up.

Previous winners include DJs Lite, Bhaze, Khomza and Shimza.

"I am disappointed that women do not participate in this competition," Shabangu said.

The auditions have already started and the final will be held on December 17 at a yet to be announced venue.
