BUDDING authors in North West are due to be honoured tomorrow night for taking part and excelling in the inaugural Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Muni-cipality Know Yourself, Know Your World Literary Competition Awards gala.

This bold nation-building initiative, together with wRite Associates and Sowetan, is named after former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda, and was open to residents of the district's municipalities.

It has attracted 600 entries and 72 nominees, written in South Africa's 11 official languages across three age groups, aspirant authors aged between 12 and 15, 16 and 20 and those aged 21 and older.

South African Literary Awards recipient Oswald Mtshali - who helped pave the way for a more militant generation of black poets including Sipho Sepamla, Mongane Wally Serote and Mafika Gwala (many of whom were strongly influenced by the Black Consciousness Movement) - will be among the dignitaries.

Poet Dolly Kunene, who read poetry in tribute to Nobel Peace laureate Nadine Gordimer at the project's launch in Klerksdorp this year, will also attend.
