Fix the defence, Vonk urges SA

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Hans Vonk says the national team will need a resolute defence in their Fifa World Cup qualifier return leg against Cape Verde tomorrow (Moses Mabhida Stadium, 7pm).

Bafana suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against the islanders away in Praia on Friday.

The result was a blow to Bafana's qualifying hopes, although they did get a reprieve after Senegal and Burkina Faso could only play to a draw.

In Friday's loss, Bafana had taken the lead through Tokelo Rantie but Cape Verde fought back to secure victory courtesy of a brace from Nuno Rocha.

Bafana had a shaky performance in defence with out-of-sorts Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho capping a howler with a bizarre red card in the 66th minute.

"They will need to put up a better effort as a team collectively but they will need to improve their defence, as it let them down," said Vonk, who retired in 2011. "I think everyone involved will have to get their act together very quick."

The former Ajax Cape Town shot stopper, who is now a youth coach at the Urban Warriors, was part of Stuart Baxter's team that clinched a crucial 2-1 World Cup qualifying win against Cape Verde some 12 years ago.

With Baxter having only been reappointed as head coach earlier in the year, Vonk says the players are perhaps still familiarising themselves with his methods.

"The players, I think, are still getting used to the idea of having Stuart back as the coach after the departure of [Shakes] Mashaba.

"I have full trust in Baxter that he will get things right but as one can understand, results are immediately required from him as he took over in the middle of the qualifiers," said the 43-time capped keeper.

Vonk added that Friday's result was an anomaly and Bafana should be able to get the job done at home.

Bafana are third in the group with four points after three games while leaders Burkina Faso have five points.
