Final or no final, we want to do well - Benni

By Tiyani wa ka Mabasa | 2017-10-12 08:06:50.0

The MTN8 final this weekend will be Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy's first but he insists he's not nervous.

McCarthy, 39, is new in the coaching scene, and the clash against SuperSport United at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday will be his maiden from the touchline.

However, the former Bafana Bafana striker has played in big finals before, including the 2004 Uefa Champions League when his side Porto beat Monaco 3-0 to win European club football's coveted trophy.

Asked what separates two teams in the final, McCarthy is clearly working on his team to ensure they commit the least errors and emerge victorious.

"I think the team that makes the least mistakes [will win], I guess. I think we just have to be focused and take risks at times, but we must be as disciplined as we can be and that goes a long way," McCarthy said yesterday.

"Both teams have very good individual talent, but it's how good you work as a team and that's going to determine which team comes out on top."

McCarthy, at this stage, is more excited about the final and maintained that there are no nerves in the squad.

"The guys don't seem too nervous about it, which is what probably would help come Saturday," he said.

"I'm not nervous yet, but probably when I get to Friday it would start to hit me, but this is a game of football - final or no final, you just want to continue doing what you do and that's to play well, work as hard as we can and don't make it easy for the opposition.

"Hopefully, we can continue the good run that we are in," he added.

The Citizens have won seven of their nine matches this season - they lost the other two to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. McCarthy firmly believes that this could stand them in good stead in the decider.

So based on their results, this is a side that doesn't play draws, so there's a good chance the final will end in regulation time.
