Tinkler hopes to run rings around Zesco

SuperSport United coach Eric Tinkler aims to use his team's pace as an X-factor against Zesco United away in the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal second leg at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium tomorrow (3pm SA time).

The cup tie - in Ndola, 316km north of Lusaka - remains even heading into the return fixture following a goalless draw last week at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Tinkler will look to unleash his speedy players including Aubrey Modiba, Thabo Mnyamane and Thuso Phala to inspire the team in the do-or-die encounter.

"The transition has become the most important phase of the modern game. That's when you need to be hurting teams because the only time they open up is when they have possession, so when you win that possession your transition needs to be good," Tinkler said.

With an MTN8 final berth already in the bag - against Cape Town City next month - Matsatsantsa have set the target of reaching the final of the Telkom Knockout and the Confederation Cup.

The team will be satisfied that they did not concede a valuable away goal against the Zambian giants in the first leg, but will be equally worried that they didn't score in Atteridgeville.

"I think we have to play with a lot of intelligence. Ultimately, they need the goal more than us and we need to hurt them every time they try to come at us," the former Orlando Pirates coach said.

Tinkler will plan diligently for the encounter against Zlatko Krmpotic's men who lost their last two league games to Lumwana Radiants and Zanaco.

"They are a tough team to break down, particularly at home.

"The way they are going to play will be slightly different and if they don't sit back again then we will have to find that goal because it benefits us to find that away goal and makes it more difficult for them.

"They are a very good team in terms of structure. We need to make sure we don't leave ourselves exposed."
