Sundowns keep their cool

North Africa is no place for sissies and Mamelodi Sundowns were reminded just how unwelcoming Wydad Casablanca can be after a training ground debacle that left the team without facilities to prepare for the second leg.

Sundowns will face Wydad in the quarterfinal decider of the CAF Champions League at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium tomorrow (10pm SA time).

The balance of the tie is in favour of Sundowns as they take a 1-0 advantage from their win in the first leg at home last weekend.

It did not take long for Wydad to start the mind games as Sundowns received a hostile reception in Morocco with no training facilities availed to them and the clash being moved from the Stade Mohamed V.

Sundowns were only able to hold their first training session in Rabat on Wednesday evening after Wydad failed to provide a training ground after their arrival on Tuesday. The team was eventually given the Stade du FUS to use for their preparations.

Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango expected nothing less from the north Africans, saying he wants his teammates to be hard-nosed against the belligerent Moroccans.

"We know what's coming. They [Wydad] are very hard working and aggressive and we must also work hard to get to the final," the Ugandan number one said.

The CAF Player of the Year has thrived in the competition since playing a pivotal role in Sundowns' triumph last season.

"It has been a dream for us to win the Champions League and it drives us. We can play the Premiership every year but it's not easy to be in the African tournament every season.

"It was my dream to play in it [Champions League]. So when given the opportunity I want to give my best because not everyone gets a chance to play in it. It gets the best out of me."
