Benni, Tinkler in grudge Wafa Wafa showdown

Benni McCarthy has set up an MTN8 final against his once sworn enemy Eric Tinkler after Cape Town City overcame Bidvest Wits 2-1 yesterday.

The rookie coach will face Tinkler's SuperSport United for the R8-million Wafa Wafa cup.

City secured a comprehensive 3-1 aggregate win after a 1-0 victory in the first leg.

They also completed a hat-trick of wins over Wits this season having also beaten them in the league.

McCarthy and Tinkler had beef from back in 2011, infamously exchanging words when McCarthy was a player at Pirates and Tinkler an assistant coach at Wits.

McCarthy reached his maiden final in only his fifth match in charge in all competitions.

An own goal from Ahmad Gamal and a strike from Lehlohonolo Majoro helped the Mother City outfit march to the final, while Robyn Johannes netted an own goal for Wits.

Veteran midfielder Steven Pienaar was deployed in the middle of the park for Wits alongside Granwald Scott.

City, though, held their own in the midfield battle.

It was clear that Wits's game plan was dependant on them providing crosses from the wings.

Wits were denied a goal in the first half after Slavko Damjanovic scored but was judged to be offside. The home side also saw a shot from Gamal cleared off the line by City defender Johannes.

Majoro all but killed off the encounter with his goal in the 72nd minute.

Wits remained winless all season in open play after managing only to beat Golden Arrows on penalties to advance to the MTN8 last four.
