New gems who won Baxter over

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter will be hoping to continue getting some players who have impressed him in the last four weeks.

This is based on the impressive performances by some of the new caps during the Cosafa Cup campaign and the just concluded African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifiers against Botswana.

Bafana are through to the third and final round of Chan after beating Botswana 1-0 at Moruleng Stadium at the weekend. South Africa won the tie 3-0 on aggregate.

Baxter's boys will meet Zambia over two legs next month and the winner will qualify for the tournament to be hosted by Kenya early next year.

Since his first official assignment in June - the Afcon qualifier against Nigeria - the Englishman has been forced to reshuffle his squad for the Cosafa Cup and the Chan fixtures owing to some players being recalled by their teams.

Baxter, though, has been left hugely impressed by some of the players and has high hopes for the future. "The younger ones have thrown their hats in the ring, but are they ready now? No, they are not.

"But we have Zambia now and the young ones will get a couple of international games," said Baxter following his team's 1-0 win against Botswana on Saturday.

Among those Baxter would want to select for the Zambia tie are Kaizer Chiefs forward Ryan Moon, 20, who scored two goals over the two legs against the Zebras; midfielders Sipho Mbule (SuperSport United, 19) and Jamie Webber (Stellenbosch, 19), while defender Sandile Mthethwa (Orlando Pirates, 20) has also received some praise.

"If you look at the younger ones that I knew little about, Sandile has been quite impressive, Sipho came in and gave a very mature performance but I knew him from SuperSport.

"Ryan has done well and could have scored more goals, we also have Jamie. [Siphelele] Ntshangase [Black Leopards midfielder, 24]] is a very talented player that I didn't know too much about. He did a good job. A player like him put his hands up a little bit and said, 'hey, just remember me for the future, keep an eye out for me', which I will.

"I think we have found a way we can approach Cosafa and Chan and it will serve South African football," Baxter said.See Page 18
