Some of the top names in South African football over the last decade find themselves without a club just a few weeks ahead of the start of the new Premier Soccer League season‚ headlining a long list of free agents.

Lebohang Mokoena‚ Lerato Chabangu‚ Morgan Gould‚ Mark Mayambela‚ Tlou Segolela‚ Franklin Cale and Calvin Kadi are just some who have still to sign-up for the new campaign.

The status of Bafana Bafana defender Siboniso Gaxa is also up in the air at Kaizer Chiefs‚ with the club insisting he is a free agent and the player suggesting he still has two years to run on his contract.

Gould has been training this week with his former club‚ SuperSport United‚ who have yet to make a decision on whether to sign the 33-year-old after he was released by Chiefs at the end of the last campaign.

Mokoena is keeping fit with the reserves at Orlando Pirates after he left Mamelodi Sundowns. The 29-year-old‚ who has spent 13 years in the South African top-flight at Pirates and Sundowns‚ has played little in the last few seasons as he struggled first with injury and then battled to break into the first team at ’Downs.

Segolela has also joined Mokoena training at his old club after he was released by Platinum Stars and now faces an uncertain future. At least he has the opportunity to keep fit in a professional environment.

Chabangu‚ a Bafana international as recently as 2014‚ left Chippa United at the end of last season‚ while Mayambela is a free agent having left SuperSport just six months into a three-year contract.

He was slammed by Matsatsantsa coach Stuart Baxter for his “attitude towards his job both on and off the field”.

Bafana international winger Cale‚ once of Sundowns and SuperSport‚ and who most recently completed a second spell at Ajax Cape Town‚ is having a trial at newly-promoted Highlands Park for what could be a possible move back to Gauteng.

All of them believe they can still do a job in the top-flight in but a close season that has seen an unprecedented number of squad changes at just about all top-flight teams‚ there is little opportunity.

Instead‚ clubs are looking to bring in younger talent and promote within their own development structures‚ mostly for financial reasons.

Other players in limbo include Letladi Madubanya‚ who has been on trial at BidVest Wits‚ Thamsanqa Teyise‚ Lennox Bacela‚ Mduduzi Nyanda‚ Levy Mokgothu‚ Ryan Chapman and Faty Papy‚ among many others.
