Semenya expected to shine

After South Africa claimed two victories coupled with meeting records in the opening two IAAF Diamond League races, the spotlight will be on Caster Semenya to keep the momentum going.

The Olympic champion will be SA's sole flagbearer at the third edition of the one-day international track and field meeting in Eugene tomorrow.

Semenya, 26, made an ideal start to the defence of her 800m Diamond title with a sub-two minute (1 minute, 56.61 seconds) victory in Doha, Qatar early this month, which catapulted her to top the women's world leading times over the two lap.

Simenya will face her usual rivals - Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi and Kenya's Margaret Wambui - who settled for silver and bronze medals, respectively, behind the SA champion at last year's Olympic Games in Rio.

Besides SA's interest in Semenya's race, the 100m contest at the Prefontaine Classic is one of the most antipated, with the battle between the old and the young featuring American Justin Gatlin, 35, and the 22-year-old Andre de Grasse of Canada.

The next Diamond meeting will be in Rome, Italy on June 8.

Semenya's race starts at 11:16pm SA time.
