Caster Semenya will compete in only the 800m at the Rio Olympics‚ coach Jean Verster confirmed on Friday night.

She had entered both the 400m and 800m events‚ but doing both would have meant doing the one-lap race before her favourite 800m event.

That could have risked tiring her out.

Asked on whatsapp what decision‚ if any‚ had been made regarding Semenya‚ Verster replied: “Just 800“.

Semenya’s 400m best of 50.74sec is more than a second off the world lead.

Verster and other coaches believed she‚ as the number one 800m runner in the world‚ was better off focusing on the one race.
