Boxing SA (BSA) chief Tsholofelo Lejaka has given the thumbs up to veteran promoter Rodney Berman who still stages super tournaments after four decades.

Berman's Golden Gloves Promotion has been in the fistic game since 1977 and celebrated its 40th anniversary last month.

He will stage a six-bout card that will be headlined by the vacant IBO cruiserweight title fight between Kevin "Two Guns" Lerena and Congolese Youri Kayembre Kalenga at Emperors Palace on Saturday.

Thulani Mbenge will put his SA welterweight belt on the line against Mzoxolo Ndwayana, while Nkululeko Mhlongo's national junior middleweight strap will also be up for grabs against Brandon Thysse.

"It promises to be a cracker of a tournament, based on the quality of the line-up.

"Rodney is definitely doing something good even after 40 years," said Lejaka, who graced the pre-fight medical in Kempton Park yesterday.

The ceremony was conducted by doctor Steven Selepe and veteran ring official Jaap van Niewenhuizen, who deputised for BSA Gauteng manager Archibald Nyingwa.

Lerena, Kalenga, Mhlongo, Thysse and Mbenge were given a clean bill of health for their fights.

These fighters were also within the required weight limits. Lerena and Kalenga tipped the scale at 93.35kg and 91.25kg, respectively. The limit is 94kg.

Mhlongo registered 73.10kg while Thysse tipped the scale at 70.40kg. Their limit was 73.34kg. Mbenge weighed 68kg (limit was 73.34kg).
