Uthongathi beat Eagles to ABC title

Uthongathi narrowly edged a spirited Super Eagles outfit 1-0 to claim the R1-million prize money and the national ABC Motsepe League title at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London yesterday.

Both sides were promoted to the National First Division (NFD) after they topped their respective groups during the week-long third-tier ABC Motsepe playoffs.

Yesterday's game was evenly matched with both sides going all out in an attempt to be crowned as the national champions.

But a goal from Siyabonga Vilane was enough to seal the victory for the "Cane Cutters" as the Tongaat-based Uthongathi is affectionately known.

While the KwaZulu-Natal side walked away as the overall winners, Super Eagles, who will be the only team from the Free State in the NFD, took home to Bethlehem R500000.

A total of R300000 - from the portion of the finalists' purses - will be donated to developmental soccer projects that will be chosen by the two teams, Safa and the Motsepe Foundation.

Uthongathi secured promotion on the last day, while Eagles surprised many in a group that had favourites Acornbush United of Mpumalanga.
