'Mbenge will dethrone Ness in welterweight bout'

Former SA welterweight champion Harold Volbrecht predicted yesterday that a new South African welterweight champion will be crowned on Sunday at Emperors Palace.

Current champion Shaun Ness will defend against Thulani "Tulz" Mbenge in the main bout of Golden Gloves' "Show Stopper" bill at the imposing casino in Ekurhuleni.

"Mbenge will be crowned," said Volbrecht, who defended his welterweight crown 19 times and retired undefeated in 1989.

Volbrecht, who is now a top trainer, said the clash on Sunday will be a difficult one for Ness.

"He [Shaun] is not a bad fighter at all; he is strong and always fit but I think Mbenge's height will be his advantage."

Ness - who is trained by Colin Nathan - last fought in July when he retained his belt on points against Ayanda Mthembu in Kempton Park. The win was Ness's 10th in 13 fights.

Mbenge, who holds the ABU belt, is undefeated in nine bouts with as many knockouts.

The challenger from Mdantsane is trained by Sean Smith in Johannesburg.

The combatants met yesterday at the pre-fight medical which was conducted by BSA manager Archie Nyingwa.

Both were within the required 5% limit as they tipped the scale at 68.05 and 69.50 kilograms, respectively. Ness and Mbenge must be within 66.68 kilograms during the official weigh-in on Saturday.

Action in this tournament, which features a non-title fight between Kevin Lerena and American Sergio Ramirez, will start at 2pm.
