With hand speed and body movement reminiscent of the once great American Roy Jones Junior, Gideon "Hardcore" Buthelezi showcased enormous talent in overcoming Mexican Angel Aviles on Friday.

Buthelezi - a left-hander like Jones - successfully retained his IBO junior bantamweight belt with a lopsided points decision at Kempton Park Indoor Sports Centre on Friday night.

Scores were 119-109, 118-10 and 115-113.

There were no official knockdowns except for a brief stoppage in the sixth round after Buthelezi had been hit below the belt. Referee Deon Dwarte docked Aviles a point for that.

Buthelezi had the big crowd eating out of the palm of his hand, impressing with his dexterity in the main bout of the Xaba Promotions and Events box-and-dine tournament.

His trainer, Elias "Mr Fantastic" Tshabalala, delivered on his promise of presenting a completely changed Buthelezi.

"What he did is just a taste of what is still to come," warned Tshabalala. "Fortunately we have a promoter [Ayanda Matiti] who is dedicated to us. We'll know exactly when is our next fight - unlike not having a promoter because before you know it, the boxer is told to defend or face being stripped."

In the main supporting bout on Friday, Alfonzo Tissen won the ABU Southern Africa middleweight belt with a stunning third round knockout of Xolani Mvubu.

In Cape Town, Mzuvukile Magwaca and female boxer Bukiwe Nonina captured WBF bantamweight belts after defeating Joy Canoy of the Philippines and Alesia Graf from Germany, respectively.

In Durban, Ruann Visser won the ABU heavyweight belt with a third round knockout of Tanzanian Ashraf Suleiman.
