Boxing promoter Ngwenya returns with a bang

Boxing promoter Vusi Ngwenya has put together what he termed a star-studded bill to relaunch his Real Deal Promotion at OR Tambo Hall in Khayelitsha, Western Cape, next Saturday evening.

Ngwenya, who has been away from boxing for 15 years, has dubbed his eight-card tournament the "World Class of Boxing".

It features talented local fighters such as Mzuvukile "Old Bones" Magwaca, Tapiwa "Smokin' Joe" Tembo, Kizito "The Mongoose" Ruhamya, Vusumzi Tyatyeka as well as a number of up and coming fighters from the Western Cape.

"I am back with a bang," said the 50-year-old Ngwenya whose father, Themba Ngwenya, was a professional boxer who later became a promoter.

"I expect our people to come in big numbers to support this tournament which features mostly local boys. This is one of the many tournaments to revive boxing in Khayelitsha," said Ngwenya.

Vusi has given Tyatyeka from Khayelitsha the responsibility of topping the bill.

He said Tyatyeka will welcome Sanele Msimanga from KwaZulu Natal for a vacant WBF International lightweight. Tyatyeka once held the same belt.

Magwaca, the current WBA Pan African bantamweight holder from Site C in the Western Cape, will take on war veteran Sibusiso Khumalo from Gauteng over 10 rounds.

Magwaca is based in East London under veteran trainer Loyiso Mtya.

The boxer, who is managed by Mlandeli Tengimfene, is in camp in Johannesburg sparring with stable-mate Zolani "Last Born" Tete who is preparing for his WBO title elimination bout against Arthur Villanueva in Wales on the same night.

Tembo, the Cape Town-based Zimbabwean, will host Anslin Booysens from Eldorado Park over eight rounds in the bantamweight class.

Ruhamya, who hails from Congo, will take on Mfundo Wongo over six rounds in the junior heavyweight class.

Ngwenya said action will begin at 7pm.
