Konkco v Joyi: battle of styles

They say styles make fights, and this long-held argument will be tested at East London's Orient Theatre on Sunday when IBO mini flyweight champion Simpiwe "Chain Reaction" Konkco defends against Nkosinathi "Mabere" Joyi.

Konkco is a right-hander (orthodox) while Joyi fights from an awkward left-handed (southpaw) stance. Konkco - whose corner will be manned by trainers Colin Nathan and Vusi Mtolo - finds himself with a rather difficult task. To face a left-hander is an awkward task for any orthodox boxer, but it is not insurmountable as long as the right-hander is well-drilled in the awkward angles that the left-hander represents.

The bout between Konkco and Joyi (former IBO and IBF mini flyweight holder) will be staged by Golden Gloves whose chief executive Rodney Berman wants to honour ailing 67-year-old former trainer/manager Mzimasi Mnguni.

The truth going into the fight for Konkco though is that the southpaw will always be more comfortable fighting orthodox opponents. Konkco must be suitably prepared for a battle of foot placement throughout the fight only if it goes the scheduled 12 rounds distance.

If Konkco does not contest the foot placement and merely comes forward in straight lines, he will risk walking into a straight left hand.

Konkco will need to keep Joyi guessing with at least the threat of a different type of attack. Joyi, 33, seems to have lost the sting which saw him chalk up six defences of the SA belt, three of the IBO belt and two for his IBF strap. He has 26 wins from 31 bouts.

Konkco, 30, has 16 wins from 21 bouts. Action on Sunday will start at 2pm.
