Mvubu to prove point

Xolani Mvubu must disregard his nickname "Steady but Sure" and instead whip Barend van Rooyen in their bout on Saturday evening in order to accelerate his progress which is being suppressed by the ratings committee, warns trainer Themba Zulu.

"It has become clearer to me that he will not reach for the stars any time soon because there are sinister forces that are prepared to destroy either him or me," alleged Zulu of the Geo Maroon Boxing Club in KwaThema.

"Xolani must just engulf Barend in a storm of flailing leather. Just like me, Xolani, is in a bad mood because he has been controversially kicked out of the top 10 in the middleweight division - no explanation was given.

We just saw his name had been removed from the ratings of last month.

"It all began after Xolani beat Bongani Mlotshwa over eight rounds in February.

"BoxRec.Com, which updates records, wrongly recorded that Xolani lost that fight, and that error cost us a WBF-sanctioned fight. We ended up fighting Walter Dlamini in a non-title six-rounder in North West which ended in a draw."

Just two weeks ago, Mvubu won a bout in KwaNongoma with a fifth round stoppage.

"We expected to see an improvement in the ratings but unfortunately we got dropped completely from the top 10," said Zulu.

Attempts to get a comment from the ratings committee chairman Willie Saayman drew a blank yesterday.

Van Rooyen returned to boxing last year after a 14-year retirement and has had only three fights so far.

The 39-year-old boxer, who is trained by former world boxing champion Jan Bergman, is rated No 4.

The fight at Birchwoord Hotel on Saturday will form part of Real Steel Promotion's six bout card.

Promoter Andre Thysse has matched Congolese Patrick Mukala with Khayeni Hlungwane in a super middleweight bout.

Alfonzo Tissen will welcome Capetonian Johannes Salie, while Brandon Thysse will meet Siyamcela Mntwana in a junior middleweight fight. Thomas "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen and Daniel "Billy the Kid" Bruwer will headline the bill with a WBA Pan African light heavyweight vacant belt.

Action will begin at 7pm.
