Promoter in hot water over purses

Boxing promoter Mzoli Tempi of Lizani Events is in hot water with Boxing SA for failing to deposit purse money for his tournament which was cancelled at the 11th hour.

It was supposed to take place at Coetzenberg Stadium in Stellenbosch yesterday. BSA chief executive Tsholofelo Lejaka said they were highly disturbed by the damage brought by such developments.

"We cannot afford a situation where boxers take part in a tournament when their purse money is not guaranteed. We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that anyone found culpable of such [a] selfish and irresponsible act is made to account," Lejaka said.

The Boxing Act of 2001 states that "a promoter must not later than 30 days prior to the date of the tournament, or any other date specified by Boxing SA, deposit money with BSA in cash or by bank guaranteed cheque, the purses payable to the boxers engaged in the tournament, as well as all other monies payable through the BSA".

Boxers, including Xolisani Ndongeni, his opponent from Ghana Razak Nettey and Thembelani Nxoshe from East London are still in Cape Town.

Attempts to reach Tempi for comment yesterday were not successful as his phone was off throughout the day.
