Josephs says Wits' focus is now on trying to win the PSL title rather than the Confed Cup

Bidvest Wits want to be competitive in the Caf Confederation Cup‚ but their focus has to be on winning their maiden Absa Premiership title‚ Clever Boys goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has said.

Wits bowed out of the 2017 Caf Champions League with their 1-0 aggregate defeat against Al Ahly‚ as they could only manage a 0-0 home result in the second leg of their first round tie against at Bidvest Stadium on Sunday.

The Clever Boys have now be relegated to the lesser Confederation Cup.

It can be difficult for a team that progresses to the Confed from the prestigious Champions League to maintain the same intensity and hunger.

For Wits‚ there is the added distraction that their over-riding ambition this season is challenging for their first Absa Premiership title‚ where the Clever Boys’ strongest side ever stand a good chance this season.

“We wanted to compete in this competition‚" Josephs said.

"This was the big one for us.

“But in the Confed Cup we’ll see how far we go and we also have to focus on the league.

"We can’t win the Champions League if we can’t win the league in our country.

“In the Confed‚ I’m sure the coach (Gavin Hunt) will plan for it.

"But the big focus is on trying to win our league.” - TMG Digital
