Derby deadlock predicted

Siyabonga Nkosi and Dikgang Mabalane are on the same page when it comes to their analysis of Saturday's Soweto derby.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates stars-turned-TV pundits are of the view that the second-round Absa Premiership clash at FNB Stadium will play out to a draw despite Chiefs being in better form.

"Chiefs, for one, have had a good run but I don't see fluency in their game. Also, they are not resourceful enough in a sense that they usually score through set-pieces," said Nkosi, who had two spells at Chiefs between 2006 and 2015.

"You find that in the games they have won, 90%, if not 95% of their goals have come from set-pieces, and what happens if a team defends set-pieces very well? Pirates have a different coach now [Kjell Jonevret] and he's going to analyse them. He will try work at that and if they [Pirates] make it difficult for Chiefs in set-pieces, what is the other solution? There is no fluency," Nkosi reiterated.

He also argued that the emphasis on tactics in today's game has affected the derby, because the teams cancel each other out. "The game now relies on tactics more than on ability or skill."

On current form, many would tip Amakhosi, who are unbeaten in their last seven games, to beat the Buccaneers, who are winless in 10.

Mabalane, however, agreed with fellow SuperSport TV pundit Nkosi that current form will not have a bearing on the outcome.

"I think there is a difference in terms of how Pirates played in their last game against Polokwane City [1-1]. It could help them in terms of confidence," weighed in Mabalane, who turned out for Pirates between 2008 and 2012.

"Otherwise the games before that, we could have been talking a different story. But since there is a new coach, the mentality might have changed. So they are eager to impress the coach.

"I think Pirates can surprise but unfortunately I see another draw," Mabalane added.
