Ajax still floating on a cloud after draw against Chiefs

Last weekend’s draw with Kaizer Chiefs has injected a sense of confidence not only in the first team but also around the club‚ coach Stanley Menzo said on Thursday.

The 1-1 draw at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday comes as Ajax continue their climb away from relegation danger after being precariously placed when the former Dutch international goalkeeper took over as coach in October.

But they face another test of character‚ he said‚ when they meet high flying SuperSport United in Atteridgeville on Saturday.

“It is another tough opponent for us‚” said Menzo after recent clashes with Bidvest Wits‚ Cape Town City‚ Polokwane City and Chiefs.

“They (SuperSport Utd) are a well organised team with great transition play and who are very strong on setpieces.

"These are points we will have to take care of but we know that already.

“We have to find a way to challenge them and get a result.”

SuperSport sit on top of the Premier Soccer League standings while Ajax are down in 11th place.

Menzo said it had been a good week at Ajax’s headquarters‚ Ikamva‚ following last Saturday’s performance where Chiefs were forced to fight back to register a late equaliser.

“The players have worked hard and that gives me confidence in our chances and makes my work easier.”

Ajax have also been boosted by a return to full training for the first time on Thursday by Bafana centre back
Rivaldo Coetzee‚ who missed the game against Chiefs after sustaining ankle strain.

He will likely take the place on Saturday night of Ghanaian centre back Lawrence Lartey‚ who had been outstanding against Chiefs but is suspended after an accumulation of cards.

But skipper Travis Graham is back from a one-match ban but not sure of a place in the ream.

“I have to think about that but it’s a nice headache to have‚” said Menzo‚ whose pairing of Ndiviwe Mdabuka and new Zambian signing Roderick Kabwe put on an impressive showing against Chiefs.

“They played really well so it might be that I don’t choose Travis‚” the coach added. - TMG Digital
