"We didn’t deserve to lose at all," says Banyana captain Janine van Wyk

As Banyana Banyana captain Janine van Wyk made her way out of the dressing room after the encounter against Cameroon yesterday the defender was visibly frustrated and understandably so.

Banyana now risk being knocked out of the 2016 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after going down to the hosts by a 1-0 score line.

Any player would be frustrated seeing her team lose, but even more so for Van Wyk because she believes Banyana lost in an unfair manner.

“I think we did extremely well and we didn’t deserve to lose at all. Maybe a draw would have been a better result, because both teams were scared to concede goals,” van Wyk told TMG Digital.

“We had them in the back foot in the first half and we had them where we wanted them but they came out in the second half,” she said.

Banyana face early Afcon exitBanyana Banyana paid a heavy price for defending too deep as they lost 1-0 to Cameroon in their CAF Women Africa Cup of Nations Group A clash yesterday.

It was late in the second half, 83rd minute to be exact, when Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini was knocked off by the opposition and failed to on to the ball as a result.

But Togolese referee Aissata Ameyo Amegee allowed play to continue and with Banyana failing to clear, Genevieve Mbeleck Ngo was not far off in the box and was able to apply the finish for what proved to be the winner.

Van Wyk insisted that this was a dubious goal and shouldn’t have been allowed to stand.

“I’m really very frustrated, because I feel that South Africa got cheated on especially with the goal that was scored. Andile had the ball in her hands and the number 17 (Gaelle Enganamouit), just like she did in the first half, bashed our goalkeeper. We got a foul in the first half, but the same incident happened in the second half and they scored a goal from there.

“That is football and we just have to take it as is, because we can’t do much about it,” said Van Wyk, who is playing in her sixth Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Banyana’s next match is a must win against Egypt at Limbe Omnisports Stadium on Friday (5pm SA time).

“There is still a chance… and we have to make sure we get the goals in the last (group) match,” added the 29-year-old.

The hosts Cameroon top Group A with six points, while Egypt are second with three following their shock 1-0 win over Zimbabwe also yesterday.

South Africa and Zimbabwe are third and fourth respectively with one point each after two matches.
