Mbesuma hands Highlands Park a point against Cape Town City

Collins Mbesuma struck his 100th Premier Soccer League goal to give Highlands Park a share of the spoils as they drew 1-1 with visitors Cape Town City at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Tuesday night.

Mbesuma, erroneously credited at the weekend with a century of goals but still one shy going into Tuesday night’s clash, hit a sweet left footed shot on the half volley in the 71st minute to join an elite club in South African soccer.

It was a trademark goal from the podgy Zambian who needed just half a chance for another poacher’s effort despite the rainy conditions.

The goal came three minutes after captain Lebogang Manyama handed Cape Town City the lead in the 68th minute and put them on course for their first ever away win.

But they had to settle for a point, their second away in a week after drawing at Orlando Pirates last Tuesday.

The two real first half chances came for Highlands Pak and both from balls from the right wing from Brandon Theron.

The first cross he whipped in Charlton Mashumba, usually deadly from close range, inexplicably missed.

Then another, higher ball fell perfect for Collins Mbesuma but with Mothobi Mvala right behind him, the burley striker was put off and he headed the effort over the top.

Shu-aib Walters came to the rescue for City on the hour mark with a one-footed save to deny Khethukuthula Zwane who snuck in at the back post to get a touch to another cross from Theron.

Bongolethu Jayiya led a quick counter attack for City some five minutes after and looped along pass in for Manyama who botched the header but then made up soon after with his goal.

Substitute Judas Moseamedi had a chance to win the game for City with five minutes left but Tapuwa Kapini did well to cut the angle and get his body in the way of a close-in shot.
