Kaizer Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele maintains that the team has the potential to be successful.

Mphahlele joined Chiefs on the back of having won the league title and Telkom Knockout last season with Mamelodi Sundowns and believes that it was team spirit that saw the Brazilians prevail.

"Look, it is not easy to make a team, especially a winning team. Football is a collective effort and you need everybody to buy into what you want to do; everybody to buy into your vision and everybody to share the same goal as the coach," said the 26-year-old.

"So for us the most important thing is we have to support what the coach wants and try to implement what he says on the pitch. And most importantly, is the spirit among the guys. We have to be honest with each other," he said.

The Limpopo-born defender further said it will take time to build a team that will bring success.

"I have to try to adjust; do what the guys do and try to gel with the team. It took us time on the other side (at Sundowns) to build a formidable team. I believe that we can also do it and try to forget what happened last season. Obviously, one cannot forget what this team has done over the years in terms of winning trophies. We will get there," Mphahlele declared.

"The monkey is not yet off our back. We still need to get a couple of wins under our belts," he added.

Amakhosi's next assignment is a clash against Free State Stars tomorrow at James Motlatsi Stadium (7.30pm).
