Temba Bavuma's sparkling century on his ODI debut was the focal point of South Africa's commanding 354/5 against Ireland in their allotted overs at Willowmoore Park.

Having shared a ground-record opening partnership of 159 with Quinton de Kock (82)‚ Bavuma made his start count even though it wasn't a chanceless innings.

He was given two lives on six and 63 as Ireland's fielding went to pieces very early. Like any class player‚ he made his chances count‚ compiling his effortless century off 110 balls with 12 fours and one six. It ended in anti-climatic fashion when he skied Craig Young to Stuart Poynter at point.

His 123-ball 113 saw him become the first black South African batsman to register a test and ODI hundreds. There may be plenty of competition for places in the ODI side but it's often difficult to ignore 100s.

While the surface lacked any real pace‚ it made for challenging batting when Peter Chase made the ball kick from a length from the Chalet End. In his belligerent 66-ball knock that contained eight boundaries and two sixes‚ the newly married De Kock hit the bowlers off their lengths. He was severe on anything short‚ full and wide as the small ground encouraged over the top hitting. The pace of the pitch brought his innings to an end when he played on from Kevin O'Brien‚ having compiled his seventh ODI fifty in 42 balls before accelerating.

Stand-in ODI captain Faf du Plessis failed to fire on his alternative home-ground and his groundhog 31-ball 21 ended when his hook shot picked out William Porterfield at short third-man off Young.

When Bavuma departed‚ the stage should have been set for a David Miller explosion but he fizzled out very early when he feathered O'Brien to Gary Wilson for a laboured 16-ball 14. That set the stage for an explosive 87-run stand for the fifth wicket between JP Duminy and Farhaan Behardien that came off only 6.4 overs.

Behardien raced to a 21-ball 50 with three fours and three sixes before his innings terminated off the final ball of the innings while Duminy's fifty came off a more sedate 41 balls.
