Goal-line technology 'could save our jobs, lives'

Steve Komphela believes the introduction of goal-line technology in South African football could help save the jobs of coaches in the PSL.

The Kaizer Chiefs coach was a victim of a refereeing error, as Victor Hlungwani awarded Platinum Stars a goal that actually should not have counted at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

Robert Ng'ambi's long range effort struck the inside of the crossbar, but TV replays show the whole circumference of the ball did not go over the line. The match ended 1-1 as pressure increased on Komphela, who is winless this season.

"Clearly this would have been handled better if we had goal-line technology. I think the game has gone to a very high level and we also have to keep up to standards," said Komphela.

"It's a huge setback because you are dropping two points. One does not want to complain, but you would say put up a case and make a recommendation. It would save our jobs and our lives."

Dikwena coach Cavin Johnson, who admitted that the ball had not gone over the line, is also in favour of goal-line technology, which has already been implemented in the English Premier League. The technology also made its debut during the June-July Euro 2016 tournament in France.

"The modern game calls for that. If they introduce that, then I am all for it. It's part of lifting the game up to the next level," said Johnson.

Keeping clean sheets and winning matches is proving to be a mission at the moment for Chiefs, who were poor in their stalemate against Dikwena.

But Komphela was encouraged by the team's second-half display that earned them a point through Hendrick Ekstein's equalising strike midway into the second half.

"I thought we started a bit slow and one could never know what could have been the reasons. We played with more energy in the second half and challenged for first and second balls. We looked a little better in terms of desire. We are not happy that we did not win."

Chiefs' next match is a tricky one away from home against against Highlands Park in Tembisa on Wednesday.
