Duminy falls, but Du Plessis still standing

JP Duminy wasted a chance to score what would have been his first century in 14 completed innings in the second test against New Zealand at Centurion on Sunday, but SA powered past 350 regardless.

SA also lost Temba Bavuma during the second day’s morning session and reached lunch on 358/5.

For only the second time in SA’s 733 innings in test cricket all of their top five batsmen passed 50.

Duminy, who resumed on 67 not out, made 88.

He was dismissed in the 12th over of the day when he edged a pull to a delivery from Tim Southee and was caught behind to end a stand of 71 shared with Faf du Plessis.

In the fifth over before lunch Bavuma, who scored eight, was caught by a tumbling Doug Bracewell at fine leg after flapping at a short ball from Neil Wagner.

Captain Du Plessis kept the home side going forward, albeit painstakingly, with an unbeaten 57 off 138 balls.

Du Plessis should have been dismissed for 18 when he pulled a ball from Trent Boult towards the square boundary.

But the catch slipped through Henry Nicholls’ hands and plopped over the boundary for six.
