Life, as well all know, can be unpredictable.

Morgan Gould went to his old club SuperSport United just to keep fit during pre-season and he was even told that he is not a player they were looking to sign.

However, the veteran central defender has now been given a one-year contract.

This is because SuperSport were worried that a deal to sign Mario Booysen might not happen, so they moved quickly to tie down Gould on a short-term deal.

A loan deal was eventually agreed for Booysen, meaning Gould will serve as back up in defence.

Gould, 33, was part of Kaizer Chiefs' massive clear out at the end of last season, leaving Amakhosi after a series of injuries hampered his progress at the club.

He reunites with coach Stuart Baxter at Matsatsantsa a Pitori, a man he won two Absa Premiership titles with at Naturena.

"It's very emotional because [SuperSport] is where I started flourishing. I am coming back to a place I call home," said Gould, who was unveiled at the SuperSport players awards on Thursday.

"I was here to train and keep fit. Fortunately, I reignited what I had previously done at SuperSport. I am here to add value, work, fight and try push to the maximum. God has given me an opportunity to be on the pitch again, so it's happiness for me and my family."

Gould won two league titles with SuperSport under former coach Gavin Hunt. He will bring valuable experience and a winning mentality to the club.

"We want to achieve. As a footballer, you want to be among the top [teams]. And why not? Why reach for the ceiling when you can go to the top of the building? So our sights are far above us."

SuperSport chief executive Stan Matthews explained the decision to sign Gould.

"Morgan has signed for a season. We were straight forward with him, that he was not a player we were looking to bring in. He was not in our plans, but the delays in our negotiations around Mario Booysen left us in a bit of a predicament. We were looking for a stopgap to help cover in that centre back position."
