Muhsin urged to improve the history of Bucs

Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza refrained from saying coach Muhsin Ertugral should deliver silverware this season, but has urged him to improve Pirates' history.

Having worked at Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, Ertugral does not need to be reminded that he has to win trophies at Pirates, especially after the Buccaneers finished the last campaign with nothing to show.

Pirates will celebrate their 80th anniversary next year and even though Khoza did not say it, there'd be no better way to mark the milestone year than to have a league trophy on display in their offices.

Ertugral himself is in search of a first league title in the PSL, so it would mean even more to him to deliver the biggest prize in local football during the historic year.

"My coach and the players we bring into the team, there's one question we ask them: 'how are you going to help us improve the history of Pirates, because Orlando Pirates is not about being in the top eight or the top three? It counts for nothing. It's got to do with history," said Khoza yesterday at the MTN8 launch.

"As we celebrate 80 years next year, we are going to relive the history and contribution made by lots of people that made Orlando Pirates. This is an institution."

He added: "The coach understands what it means to coach Orlando Pirates, now that he is inside. It's not easy. Wherever he goes now, somebody is talking to him. When he was at Aces it was a bit like a holiday I think. But now it's not a holiday because 24/7 he must answer something and gets invited. It's quite an interesting job."

Asked if Ertugral has a mandate for the coming season, Khoza said: "He's got a mandate, how is he going to improve the history of Pirates?"

Meanwhile, Khoza confirmed that MTN has renewed its contract with the PSL for the top eight competition for five years. The new deal will start next year. The contract was signed in front of media and club officials in Johannesburg yesterday.
