Thobani Mncwango is set to sign a new contract with Polokwane City in the coming days‚ ending weeks of negotiations between the striker and the Limpopo club.

Mncwango‚ who netted 13 league goals last season‚ just one fewer than Premier League top-scorer Collins Mbesuma‚ had been close to a switch to Orlando Pirates‚ but that deal failed to materialise.

Instead he will remain in Limpopo and has reached an agreement with City over a new contract‚ with the parties simply needing to sign the documentation.

The 28-year-old is currently part of the City squad that is camped in Gauteng and played his first minutes of pre-season on Monday in a 2-0 victory over Highlands Park.

His coach‚ Luc Eymael‚ is delighted to have his forward for the new season.

“He was second top scorer in the league last season‚ so that shows you his quality‚” Eymael told Times Media Digital.

“He has only really started his pre-season now‚ he did not play in our previous games against Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United because he was a little bit injured.

“He is responding really well though because we have changed our system of play completely from last season and he has found it very comfortable to adapt.”

Mncwango had a stunning second half of the season in 2015/16 after a switch in position by former coach Julio Leal saw him move from the left-wing to a central striker.

He scored all four goals in a 4-1 success over SuperSport United in January‚ and netted 11 goals in 17 starts to the end of the season.

It was a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for a player whose previous two seasons had yielded a total of four goals. - TMG Digital
