“The Premier Soccer League need to be ready for us because we are ready for them‚” was the bold declaration Cape Town City owner John Comitis made on Thursday at a press conference to introduce the new club’s recent signings.
The new franchise is just over a fortnight away from its opening game – against Polokwane City at home on August 23 - and Comitis said the enthusiasm on the ground in Cape Town made him confident of the success of the new project.
“Everything just seems to be nicely aligned and things have been falling into place a lot easier than I thought they would. We’ve got a team here‚ now we just need to deliver the show. We want to be in the top five bracket”
Comitis said his purchase of the Mpumalanga Black Aces franchise had been a gamble but that he had been bowled over by the reaction from the Cape community.
“I’ve got a strong feeling about the possibilities for Cape Town City. The club seems to have captured the imagination of the city‚ across different cultures and ages.
“If this is how things could look for the club (in terms of support)‚ then our timing was right and the decision to purchase and unfold this brand is the right one for us.”
Comitis said the club would have a distinctly Cape Town focus – even though the backbone of the team are the 14 players who travelled down from Black Aces.
“I think we have a realistic chance of catching the enthusiasm and getting people back into the habit of going to the stadium‚” added Comitis‚ suggesting he was expecting a 15‚000-strong crowd at the first game and a full house of 40‚000 four days later when City entertain Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 quarter-final.
The use of the Cape Town Stadium has been secured for eight of the club’s 15 home league matches in the coming campaign.
“The council have put a proposal on the table for the use of the stadium that is manageable‚” he said.
“We are in negotiations with the stadium about another four games which might need to just be moved slightly‚ say from a Saturday to a Friday or a Friday to a Sunday.
“But four of our fixtures we planned for there are 'no go' so we are looking at alternatives and have opened discussions with other stadiums.”
PSL clubs are allowed to nominate an alternate venue.
