Cape Town City have concluded the signing of former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Robyn Johannes‚ the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old joins after a lengthy trial in the Mother City‚ adding to the defensive stocks of coach Eric Tinkler.

Johannes has spent the previous two seasons at AmaZulu‚ the last in the National First Division‚ and returns to play in the city of his birth for the first time as a professional.

The Bafana Bafana international‚ who won the last of his three caps against Malawi in 2008‚ burst onto the scene at second-tier University of Pretoria in the 2004/05 campaign and was snapped up by Sundowns.

He won back-to-back league titles with The Brazilians‚ though he featured little in both the 2005/06 and 2006/07 campaigns.

His breakthrough campaign at Chloorkop was in 2008/09 when he was a regular and two seasons later he made the move to Pirates.

He was sent on loan to Lamontville Golden Arrows for 2011/12‚ and also had a season with Maritzburg United.

City are building towards their first season in the Premier Soccer League after owner John Comitis bought the top-flight status of Mpumalanga Black Aces and relocated the club to Cape Town‚ along with 14 AmaZayoni players from the squad that finished fourth last season.

They will play their first ever match against Polokwane City on August 23‚ and three days later host Kaizer Chiefs in the quarterfinals of the MTN8.

Other players to have been signed by City include Australians Matt Sims and James Brown‚ Austrian midfielder Roland Putsche‚ Latvian defender Renard Rode‚ Samora Motloung and Tshepo Gumede (both Orlando Pirates)‚ Shaquille Abrahams (FC Cape Town)‚ Duncan Adonis (Ramblers)‚ Never Ngcuka (Cape United) and Ebrahim Seedat (Milano United).
