Boxer Phillip Ndou has handed himself over to police‚ appeared in court and been released on R1000 bail with his case of assault remanded to September 15.
Ndou allegedly assaulted Boxing South Africa official Archie Nyingwa‚ and referees Thabo Spampool and Ben Ncapayi at a weigh-in ahead of a tournament at the Thohoyandou Town Hall in Limpopo on Friday night.
The three opened a case of assault against the 39-year-old one-time great‚ who handed himself over to the SA Police Service at Thohoyandou Police Station on Tuesday afternoon.
SAPS Limpopo corporate communication officer Colonel Ronel Otto said on Wednesday: “He [Ndou] handed himself at Thohoyandou Police Station with his lawyer yesterday [Tuesday] afternoon.
“He was arrested for assault to do grievous bodily harm. He did appear in court on Tuesday – he received R1000 bail and the case was remanded to September 15 for further investigation.”
Ndou lived up to his nickname of “Time Bomb” when he exploded at the weigh-in‚ allegedly beating up BSA Gauteng manager Nyingwa‚ Spampool and Ncapayi with a knobkerrie.
The former world title challenger reportedly accused the officials of ruining his life by revoking his licence.
Ndou was forced into early retirement after collapsing following a loss to Isaac Hlatshwayo in 2004‚ but he returned against medical advice in 2009.
He reportedly hoped to feature in this weekend’s tournament with a bout against Malawian Chimwemwe Chiotcha.
However‚ BSA had revoked Ndou’s licence based on the advice of two physicians.
BSA CEO Tsholofelo Lejaka said the body will institute its own proceedings against Ndou once they have assembled information on the incident.
“There are two instances now. Because there is the case of him having transgressed the BSA code of conduct‚ and there is also the criminal element‚” Lejaka said.
“For us‚ we have to wait for the criminal proceedings to take place‚ and at the same time assemble information on the incident‚ before we can institute our own disciplinary proceedings.
“As far as his licence being revoked is concerned‚ that was done for medical reasons and we had already begun the process of meeting with Ndou to explain the reasons for that.
“We will continue that process and have a meeting with him in that regard.”
