Makazole Tete lacklustre in taking IBF belt

UNCONVINCING: Makazole Tete
UNCONVINCING: Makazole Tete

Is Makazole "The Professor" Tete the real deal or just riding the coat tails of younger brother Zolani "last Born" Tete's successes?

That question is being asked in boxing circles after Makazole stopped Raymond Tabugon in the fifth round for the vacant IBF International junior bantamweight belt on Friday.

Tete, 30, was unimpressive against the Filipino at East London's Orient Theatre on Friday night.

His conduct in a bout that headlined a programme that was staged in honour of Nelson Mandela was similar to that against Gideon "Hardcore" Buthelezi for the vacant IBO junior bantamweight belt at the same venue in December.

Buthelezi played with Tete as he registered a lopsided points win in front of grossly irked East London fans.

Expectations on Friday were that he would grab the golden moment bestowed on him by promoter Ayanda Matiti with both hands, but the boxer seemed lost and uninterested.

Tabugon was actually a victim of his own undoing.

He jumped into an uppercut that was thrown out of desperation, and he kissed the canvas.

Tete was pressed into action and staggered his foe, whose corner men jumped inside the ring and rescued him.

In the main supporting bout, Aphiwe "Swagger" Mboyiya captured the IBF Intercontinental junior lightweight belt with a lopsided points win against Tabugon's countryman Jerry Castroverde.

Mboyiya, who got up from the canvas in the first round, was wobbled by Castroverde's punches in the fourth, but he cleverly held on to eventually lose a point for that infringement. He controlled the action as the fight progressed.

Earlier on, WBA Pan African mini flyweight holder Siphamandla Baleni added the SA and IBO Intercontinental straps to his collection after defeating Daluxolo Mangcotywa on points.
