Phakamani Mahlambi wants to win the PSL top scorer award next season, even though he will miss the start of the new campaign as he recovers from injury.

The Bidvest Wits forward, 18, expects to make a return to action in about "three or four months", after a knee injury ended his debut season prematurely and denied him an opportunity to play at the upcoming Olympics in Brazil.

"I think I had a great season. Next season I want to do better and I hope injuries will not be in my way again.

"When I started last season I wanted to win the top scorer award, but I had the injury," Mahlambi said.

"Next season I am aiming high, so when I come back I will do my best.

"I want to win the top scorer award and I want to get more awards, so that I get more chances to go overseas."

Wits have fallen short in their challenge for the title in recent seasons, and there's increasing pressure for coach Gavin Hunt to deliver silverware, considering he has one of the best squads in the league.

Mahlambi could only watch from a distance as the national under-23 team left for Rio at the weekend.

He's hoping they can get through a group which has hosts Brazil, Iraq and Denmark.

"I cannot say I am disappointed [to miss out on the Olympics]. I am still young and I believe we can qualify for the next Olympics. I am looking forward to making South Africa qualify for the next Olympics [in Tokyo, Japan, in 2020]."
