Mokoena quits Sundowns

"I was not going to watch my career go down the drain". With these words, Lebohang Mokoena has explained why it was important to leave Mamelodi Sundowns after seven years.

Mokoena (29), has left the Brazilians following the expiry of his contract at the end of last month.

"Cheeseboy" joined Sundowns in 2009 from Orlando Pirates and hit the ground running. During his first season at the club in 2009/10, Mokoena made 23 appearances and scored six goals. And for the next few seasons, things went reasonably well for the dribbling wizard.

The last two seasons, however, Mokoena has just one start and a handful of substitute appearances to show. That didn't sit well with the Soweto-born midfielder and he realised he had overstayed his welcome.
