South African tennis ace Kevin Anderson received death threats just days after he was elected to the ATP Player Council.

Anderson took to social platform Twitter this week and revealed that he received death threats from punters who had bet on him winning a match at Wimbledon.

The Johannesburg-born star‚ ranked No24 in the world‚ was knocked out in the first round by Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin on Monday and this seemingly did not go down very well with some unsavoury types. The South African lost the match 4-6‚ 6-7 (13-15)‚ 6-4‚ 7-6 (7-2)‚ 6-3.

“Bummed to have lost yesterday‚ but at least I had a ton of death threats on facebook and twitter to make me feel better about things…‚” tweeted Anderson.

He then went on to thank those who showed him support in defeat.

“Thanks to GOOD people out there who stick with me through this tough year. My #Wimbledon is done‚ looking forward to US Hardcourt Season.”

On Monday the 30-year-old Anderson was named alongside world top-ranked player Novak Djokovic‚ Brit Andy Murray and Frenchman Gilles Simon‚ among others‚ after being voted by players onto the council that will serve for the next two years.

The Florida-based star’s next big tournament will be the US Open in August.
