Disconcertingly‚ only two Premier Soccer League clubs appeared to have a notable scouting presence at the Cosafa Cup over the past two weeks‚ which Bafana Bafana won 3-2 over Botswana in Saturday’s final.

Given that this was the region’s headline competition where almost all the top domestic players from southern African countries were on show‚ it seems a noticeable oversight because there was certainly some fresh fruit ripe for the picking in some of the new stars on show.

Here are six stars of the Cosafa Cup that PSL clubs should consider taking a closer look at‚ or even signing.

Botswana forward Onkabetse Makgantai (jersey number: 10)

There is no question that the 20-year-old scorer of the remarkable chipped goal over Reyaad Pieterse’s head in the 16th-mihnute of the final has all the qualities to make it in the PSL.

He’s just 20‚ has lightning pace and a devastating turn of direction that can leave defenders for dead‚ as he did repeatedly in Botswana’s penalties semifinal victory against Democratic Republic of Congo.

He can play at right wing‚ deep striker or playmaker.

The little man showed with his goal against South Africa‚ looking up for a split second then attempting an audacious chip from 25 metres that actually came off‚ that he can also score world-class goals.

He deservedly won Player of the Tournament.

Botswana playmaker Kabelo Seakanyneng (jersey number: 7)

Seakanyeng also scored against South Africa‚ but there was an element of fortune to his strike as his attempted cross – which did have a vicious swerve on it – was allowed in by Pieterse through the goalkeeper’s arms.

But this little playmaker showed skills in the tournament‚ and an ability to provide telling passes in the final third‚ that could certainly add value to a PSL club.

Botswana goalkeeper Mwampole Mampule (jersey number: 16)

After Platinum Stars keeper Kabelo Dambe got injured early in Botswana’s quarterfinal against Namibia‚ 24-year-old Mwampule came in and impressed with his reflex saves and control of his area.

He saved Deon Hotto’s spotkick in the penalty shootout against Namibia‚ then Guy Basisila’s as the Zebras won again on penalties in the semi-final.

Democratic Republic of Congo defensive midfielder Nelson Munganga (jersey number: 5)

The 22-year-old from wealthy AS Vita Club might not come cheaply.

But he has a class to his positional play‚ strength in the challenge‚ ability to break down attacks in midfield‚ win the ball‚ then unleash his own players in the other direction with accurate‚ inventive long or short passes that would make him a good signing for a South Africa club.

DR Congo centreback Ungenda Muselenge (jersey number: 12)

The big central defender is a physical monster in the mould of Chippa United’s James Okwuosa and he can bully opposition forwards into submission‚ but is also clever in his positional play‚ where he is seldom caught out of place.

The tall‚ strong 26-year-old DC Motema Pembe defender has leadership skills‚ having captained his team at the Cosafa Cup.

Lesotho winger Jane Thaba-Ntso (jersey number: 13)

Like Makgantai‚ in the quarterfinal‚ he scored a fine chipped goal over poor Pieterse. Also 20‚ he is a similar type of forward – small‚ very fast‚ gets into spaces and very difficult for defenders to pick up with his constant‚ energetic movement.

Readily available to be snapped up at some bargain as he is on the books of Lesotho’s Maseru-based Matlama FC.
