Fallen Soweto giants Moroka Swallows may be down in the ABC Motsepe League but certainly not out after securing new owners.

This was revealed by Gauteng MEC for Education and staunch Swallows supporter Panyaza Lesufi during a radio interview on Metro FM last night.

Lesufi said the club has new local owners who have a financial muscle that will pave the way to secure a PSL or NFD status.

"Swallows is now owned by South Africans. It is a consortium that we'll announce in due course. I want to thank Leon Prins [ex-Swallows director], without whom we wouldn't be where we are. He made huge sacrifices," said Lesufi.

He refused to reveal the identity of the new owners , saying he did not want to "steal their thunder".

Prins represented majority shareholders at the club after the late German businessman Dieter Bock acquired the club in 1999.

"What I can confirm is that discussions are at an advanced stage. We've got a 14-day period for the new owners to announce the status of the team, where it will play and at the same time introduce the new management," Lesufi said.

He added: "The main issue is to have the team back in the NFD or PSL. There is a team that is negotiating with NFD and PSL clubs. I don't want to disclose names."

Prins was not available for comment .
