Hunt: Players must step up now

BIDVEST Wits coach Gavin Hunt is seemingly playing mind games. He first claimed that their Absa Premiership title challenge may be affected because of a depleted squad.

Yet the 51-year-old maintained that it is still Mamelodi Sundowns' title to lose.

Hunt was speaking after his side beat SuperSport United 2-0 on Tuesday to put more pressure on the leaders, Sundowns.

"Sundowns have got to still be the big favourites," said Hunt, who won three league titles during his time at SuperSport United.

"How many games are left? Four? There are 12 points to play for and anything can happen. We will just keep soldiering on," he said.

Hunt further stated that he may be forced to even put 17-year-old striker Shungu Dutiro on the bench for Saturday's match against Chippa United. The team's strikers, James Keene and Phakamani Mahlambi, are sidelined with injuries.

"Players need to step up now with four games to go. It's not going to be easy. We have to test our strength and our bench.

"I always say that if you want to win things, your bench has to be strong. Our bench lacks players in certain positions," Hunt said.

"Sundowns have the quality and we will just keep going," he added.

Meanwhile, Wits boss Brian Joffe has hailed Hunt as one of the top coaches in the country. Hunt is in his third season with the club but he is yet to win silverware.

Joffe, though, has nothing but praise for Hunt.

"I can't remember the exact stats, but I think we've been in the top three or four since he's been around. So we are very happy with him and I think he's done a great job. He is certainly in the top two of the best coaches in the country. We are lucky to have him," he said.

Asked whether there are incentives in place for the players and technical team if they win the league, Joffe said winning the title means more than the money.

"They've got their own incentives and they know what they are. We are playing hard for the team, not only for the money. It is good for your CV to win the league and hopefully, we will get lucky," Joffe concluded.
