Khoza urges footballers to have life insurance policies

Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairperson Dr Irvin Khoza has pleaded to football players to secure the future of their loved ones should anything happen to them.

Khoza was speaking at the announcement of payout of a R4 million life policy on murdered Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa.

He said that every player must have life covers and wills as most of them leave nothing behind for their families when they die.

"The players on their own should do their own life covers because they are employed to make sure that they provide for their families," Khoza said.

"Each time they sign contracts it is very important for players to write their own wills.”

He said players should have life covers as their travels in between matches can come with its own tragedies.

"Players travel to Africa over long distances, anything is possible. You saw what happens to Richard Henyeke, lot of players die accidental.

"It is very important for player that it is in their interest that they make it easy for all us that when they sign contracts they must also sign a will,” said Khoza.

He also said it is up to the players to choose who they sign their will with, citing it could either be with the 'club or their lawyer'.

Meyiwa was killed at the house of former girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus two years ago. Two armed men allegedly entered the house and an altercation broke out that Meyiwa reportedly intervened in.
