Da Gama set for major juggling act

Owen da Gama will name his squad for the Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal tomorrow and then faces a hectic schedule next week ahead of the start of tournament.

With some players featuring for their clubs in league matches on Sunday afternoon, Da Gama only expects a full compliment of players in Johannesburg on Monday ahead of the tournament's start on November 28.

The squad will have medical assessments done immediately before the team departs on Tuesday for Dakar ahead of the tournament's official welcoming ceremony that the side must attend the following day.

They then play their opening game of the competition against hosts Senegal next Saturday.

"It is a bit of a challenge to get the players in, assessed and then travel to Senegal for the welcoming ceremony, especially as some of the players will only arrive in camp on Monday morning," Da Gama said.

"It doesn't give us much time to prepare, but we hope to arrange a friendly against a local second division team in Senegal.

"Nothing heavy at all for the players, just a chance to get acclimatised, get used to the heat and the playing conditions. Something very low key.

"And then after that we play our first game on November 28 and we get stuck straight into the tournament."

After their match against the hosts, South Africa then have a meeting with Zambia on December 1.

Their final Group A game is against north African side Tunisia three days later.

Da Gama has admitted previously that he faces something of a selection headache over who to leave out of his 21-man squad, but was keeping his cards close to his chest ahead of tomorrow's squad announcement.

The Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations also serves as the qualification tournament for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year.

SA need to finish in the top three to book a place at the Olympic Games next August.

With the PSL having confirmed a break in fixtures to enable Da Gama to pick his best squad, stars such as Keagan Dolly and Kwanda Mngonyama should bolster SA's squad.
