Igesund a happy man

Gordon Igesund said he always expected he and his SuperSport United charges would dig themselves out of their early season slump and praised his players for their dogged spirit.

A second successive victory for the club has lifted a burden off their back and changed the mood in the camp with some tough tussles on the horizon.

"I'm most happy about the fact we kept a clean sheet because we've been conceding soft goals and tightened that up considerably," said Igesund after the 2-0 win over Chippa United in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday night brought to an end a run of six league games without success.

The victory came on the heels of a 3-1 triumph last Saturday over Lamontville Golden Arrows in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals and marks a major turnaround just as speculation around Igesund's future was beginning to ferment.

"You don't go to bed one night and the next morning you are a bad coach. We have had a terrible start to the season but we haven't been the only club," Igesund siad. "The players have all helped to take responsibility. They kept saying 'we'll get it right'. We are still trying to get it right but with each game we are getting better and better.

"But we knew exactly where the problems were and the players have worked hard to rectify that. We knew victories would come. It was the determination of the players; they want to be much further up the log."

He said he was proud to be associated with Matsatsantsa.

"When the chips were down, the players stood up and that pleases me a lot.

"Things are now looking much better and more relaxed," added Igesund.

Matsatsantsa next meet Free State Stars away in Bethlehem on Sunday and then host Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday before the mouth-watering Tshwane derby with Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout semifinals on November 7.
