Berman 'prospects' tourney a big success

Fight fans at Emperors Palace were transported back to the good old days when Sunday afternoons were boxing days.

Those who showed up at the 11-bout card of associate promoters Rodney Berman and Jeff Ellis were kept on the edge of their seats with top drawer boxing.

The tournament - a pilot project of four-rounders by the veteran promoters - was a huge success, attracting a big crowd.

Berman said his Golden Gloves Promotion would stage four such tournaments every year, starting from February.

"This is gratifying for me really to have been involved in such a wonderful development tournament.

"Credit must also go the all the fans who came in such big numbers to support the tournament," Berman said.

"Truly speaking, I did not anticipate such support. This is where the government should actually be involved - development."

Berman paid tribute to all the fighters on the bill, which was dubbed "Prospects at the Palace".

He was raving about Dee Jay Kriel, Joshua Studdard and Brandon Thysse.

Kriel outclassed Edward Disolwane; Studdard blasted Lerato Kgole in three while Thysse stopped Dennis Mbat from Nigeria in two rounds.

"They will definitely feature in the undercard of our tournament on December 1," said Berman.

"Lucky Mongebane, Nyelisani Thagambega and Thulani Mbenge will feature prominently in the four tournaments that we will have next year."

Mongebane stopped Dario Familia in two rounds.

Thagambega blasted Collin Tloubatla in the first round.
