Bafana no solace for Williams

It's been a tough few weeks for goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. He conceded nine goals in four SuperSport United matches before the rot stopped with last week's 2-1 win over Polokwane City.

But being whisked away on a Central American tour with Bafana Bafana doesn't provide the necessary solace for the goalkeeper.

Most times the 23-year-old only seems to be in the national team to make up the numbers, and he's still trying to get the rest of South Africa to forget about his horror debut against Brazil, a 5-0 drubbing at the FNB Stadium in March last year.

"After that game I played against New Zealand [two months later] and kept a clean sheet, but people don't remember that," said Williams, who is considered the third-choice keeper behind Itumeleng Khune and Jackson Mabokgwane in the team that will face Costa Rica on Thursday and Honduras five days later.

"But it is part of the game, that's how things go. I am very happy to be part of the national team again because it is an awesome experience for me."

Williams snapped up the man-of-the-match award following SuperSport's narrow win over Polokwane City in the Telkom Knockout last week.

His quality was evident, despite the side's slump.

Matsatsantsa return to action on October 17 with a tricky Absa Premiership clash away to Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and Williams hopes SuperSport, who had suffered three successive defeats before their cup win, have turned the corner.

"I think we went through the same thing this time last season and things were not going our way. But the moment we played in the Telkom Knockout, things changed. Hopefully this is our lucky cup."
